A Cultural Resource Assessment Survey of the Bay Pines Veterans Affairs Medical Campus was undertaken at the request of the Bay Pines Veterans Affairs Medical Center, by Preservation Resource, Inc. in conjunction with Florida History LLC and VOA/Ellerbe Beckett LLC. The purpose of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological and historic resources within the campus, to assess eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, and to identify potential impacts of the proposed Bay Pines VAMC Inpatient and Outpatient Improvements project on the resources.
The Bay Pines VAMC campus was established in 1931 as part of a national effort to provide improved facilities for the nations’ World War I veterans. The Bay Pines hospital campus construction was unique in its application of the regionally popular Mediterranean Revival architectural styling to standardized prototype hospital and support facilities. The cultural resource assessment survey of the campus resulted in the recordation of 21 historic resources including 14 buildings, 6 objects and one cemetery in the Florida Master Site File for the Florida Division of Historical Resources.
